Getting to Know your MacBook
Facilitator: Kyle Jongerden
Coming stock with over fifty programs and vast amount of tools, the MLTI MacBook is a truly powerful device. In this session we’ll not only play around with the powerful content creation software on your MacBook (photo editing, creating screen casts, uploading videos to YouTube) but we’ll also explore the handy tools and shortcuts on the MacBook that make life easier. Whether you’re a novice or an advanced user, you’ll benefit from the breadth of this session. Lastly, if there’s something you’ve always wanted to do with your Mac, but haven’t been able to do yet, bring your questions because we’ll end with an open forum Q and A to help you use your Mac to its fullest potential.

Khan Academy, Part 1
Facilitator: Matt Frey-Davis
Khan Academy will transform your math classroom.  It lets you focus on problem solving, and deep understanding rather than on the mechanics of arithmetic.  In this first session, we’ll focus on exploring Khan Academy from a student’s perspective, and briefly touching on some Khan Academy best practices. Part II will explore Khan Academy from a teacher’s perspective.

Using an Interactive Projector in an Elementary Classroom

Interactive Projectors can be a very effective way to enhance your everyday lessons. Interactive is the key word in this piece of equipment - get your kids involved! You’ll learn how to use your interactive projector in way that will engage students and make planning easier for you!

Khan Academy, Part 2

Part I of this series focused on the Khan Academy student experience, part II focuses on using Khan Academy successfully in your classroom.  We’ll delve deeply into the teacher tools, but also cover how to get started, integrate Khan Academy into the curriculum, and using data to help students learn.

BrainPop
Facilitator: Laura Phelps
Did you know that our whole district has access to BrainPop, an amazing collection of online animated content that is K-12 curriculum-based, aligned with the Common Core and searchable by the Maine Learning Results?  Kids of all ages love BrainPop and you will too when you see the movies, educational games, reading recommendations, writing prompts and more!

Google Apps Basics

What’s all the buzz about?  Why are teachers and students all across the RSU using these cloud-based apps?  This is an introductory session for those wishing to learn more about how and why you might choose GoogleDocs for your personal use, as well as with your students.  This is a great review for people who are still tentative in their use of Google Docs, or brand new.

Using Technology to Enhance Math Lessons

Using technology to teach, practice and explore mathematical concepts can bring the entire experience to a higher level.  This session, focused on grades K-8, will familiarize you with tools that exist on your MacBook or iPad, as well as free  resources on the internet.

Virtual Field Trips
Facilitator: Laura Phelps
Virtual field trips enable every student in RSU1 to experience a wealth of educational opportunities without leaving the classroom! For little or no money, your students can visit museums, aquariums, institutes and experts and authors all over the world.   Come to this session and learn how to tap into these amazing resources.

Using QR Codes in the Classroom

QR Codes can be found in magazines and brochures, and for art exhibits, timelines, museums, nature walks - you name it, they are popping up all over!  This short class will introduce you to what QR codes are and how they are being used, and how you might even use them with your students.

Creating a Classroom Website with Blogger

Blogger is part of our Google Apps for Education suite and it is a versatile and easy tool that you can use to create either a blog for a specific purpose (like for writing prompts and reading response journals) or for an entire classroom website.  Come check it out and see how easy it is to create an online space that you can use to showcase student work, keep parents informed, manage online resources for your students and more!

Intro to Gmail

There are lots of tips and tricks to make Gmail work for you.  This short session will help you to become more familiar with many of the settings that you have probably been wondering about, but have not yet found.  Want to learn how to retract a message?  Create folders and filters so email from certain people or groups go right into them without clogging your Inbox?  This session is for you.

Edmodo: Social Networking for Schools
Facilitator: Lawrence Kovacs
Edmodo is an easy, secure social networking site that you can use with students of all ages.  It's fun, engaging and remarkably easy to set up.  Come discover how to use the "buzz" of social networking to meet your learning objectives!

Preparing for a Laptop Reimage
Facilitator: Kyle Jongerden
Backing up your files for reimaging is no easy task. In this session we’ll cover several options to prepare your laptop for reimaging this summer including Dropbox, Google Drive, Box as well as other web-based services that help you backup your important files. In the last part of the session you’ll start backing up your files and be on the road to a happy and worry-free reimaging.

Garage Band
Facilitator: Lawrence Kovacs
GarageBand is an extraordinary sound-recording  and music composition application on your MacBook that, as it turns out,  is great for so much more than just making music!  Come learn the basics of how to use the program and hear ideas for harnessing it to enhance projects in virtually any content or subject area.

Google Apps: Beyond the Basics

Already using Google Apps?  This will help you take your usage a step further - we’ll use forms, and spreadsheets, and get into the details of sharing document, collections and integrating it into your practice..  This is a good follow up if you’ve taken a Google Apps course before.

Learning and the Brain in the 21st Century

What are the essentials skills and habits of mind that students need for today and in the future?  What does brain research tell us about technology and learning?  How can we prepare our students for a rapidly and radically changing world?  We will address these questions and others as we explore the role of teaching, learning and technology in the 21st century.

Using QuickTime for Screen Capture Videos
Facilitator: Dean Emmerson
One of the really useful things you can do with your MLTI MacBook is to capture videos of what is on your computer screen, while you narrate.  Its simple, its quick, and its very practical.  Attendees will need to bring their MacBooks or other laptop computer with the latest edition of QuickTime so that they can create their own videos as part of this class.

Introduction to iMovie

Come film and edit your own movie using iMovie. We’ll be exploring this powerful video editing program on the MLTI laptops including importing your footage, cropping and trimming, adding motion to still images, adding and trimming audio clips, voice overs, transitions, titles and sharing your movie with the world. Bring your own video camera or use one of ours for this fun hands on session.

Personalized Professional Development at Your Fingertips

Technology enables all of us to learn at our own pace, 24-7.  Join Matt, Kyle and Laura as they highlight the way that Twitter, iTunes U, Coursera and other online tools can jumpstart your professional learning and evolution.  Come to this session and learn tips for creating your own Personal Learning Network (PLN), discover how to connect with other like-minded educators all over the world, and reignite your passion for your profession!

Digital Citizenship

What does it mean to be a digital citizen today?  What are our responsibilities as educators in the realm of digital citizenship and what are some tools we can use to cultivate digital citizenship amongst our students?   What does “fair use” mean when it comes to “sharing” copyrighted materials?  In this session we’ll explore both the theoretical and practical issues involved with being an ethical educator in the digital age.

Come explore Acorn, the powerful photo editing program that’s included on the MLTI laptops. We’ll be learning how to combine images using the layer mask technique. Bring your camera and tripod or use one of ours for this fun hands on class.

LAN School

Morse High and BRCTC Only: One of our most requested sessions - learn to use LAN School to help manage laptops in your classroom.  LAN Schools lets you observe and control laptops, communicate with students, and even send surveys, tests, and quizzes.  LAN School is only currently available to grades 9-12 in RSU 1.
